What is Teacher Appreciation Week?

In 1953, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt petitioned Congress to recognize teachers. Despite congressional support, National Teacher Day was not observed until March 7, 1980. National Teacher Day has culminated in Teacher Appreciation Week since 1984.
